Brian Okonkwo, the younger brother of Super Eagles and Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, has signed a new two-year contract with West Bromwich Albion. This deal keeps him at the club until the summer of 2028.
Like his brother, Brian started his football journey at Arsenal’s Hale End Academy. He played for the Gunners in League Cup and Premier League 2 matches before moving to West Brom on a one-year deal last summer. This followed a trial with the club’s Under-21 side.
The 20-year-old goalkeeper showed his talent while with the youth team. He made 17 appearances across all competitions. His performances helped West Brom’s Under-21 side reach the later rounds of the Premier League Cup. He also played in the Premier League International Cup. His important saves helped Albion’s young players compete against strong teams.
Richard Stevens, West Brom Academy Manager, shared that the new contract shows the club’s belief in Okonkwo’s growth since he joined in September 2025. "On Brian, he came into our programme late last season, but he used that time to do a lot of work with Head of Academy Goalkeeping, Phil Smart, and in the first team with Boaz Myhill as well," Stevens said.
“He’s an important part of our programme, and if you look at most goalkeepers, they need more development time, loan moves, opportunities and patience. Brian made a big impact at the club, and I believe he will benefit from the programme over the coming season.”
Along with Okonkwo’s new deal, West Brom also announced contract extensions for three other young players. Defender Jamal Mohammed, goalkeeper Ben Cisse, and fellow shot-stopper Will Rutter will all stay with the club as West Brom builds its academy ahead of the new season.
Brian now joins the ranks of Nigerians like Josh Maja, Semi Ajayi, Osaze Odemwingie, Ifeanyi Udeze, and Sam Sodje who have all represented the one-time English champions.
