Some people pass through life leaving marks. Others leave lasting legacies. Family, friends, colleagues from Nigerian Breweries Plc, and members of Nigeria’s marketing community will gather in Lagos on August 8 to celebrate Tony Agenmonmen on his 70th birthday. They are honouring a man whose life has been marked by excellence, integrity, friendship, and a strong commitment to advancing the marketing profession.
Turning 70 is a big deal. It is a time for reflection on a life filled with purpose and achievement. For Tony, this birthday also celebrates a life dedicated to building brands, supporting people, promoting excellence, and creating lasting relationships.
Tony Agenmonmen is part of a rare group of marketing professionals who have done almost everything in the field. His career at Nigerian Breweries Plc lasted over 30 years. He rose through the ranks, gaining deep insight into consumer behaviour, brand management, strategic marketing, and corporate leadership. His time at one of Nigeria’s leading companies gave him a wealth of knowledge and experience that commands respect in the business community.
Those who worked with him at Nigerian Breweries remember his skills and his calm nature. He had an analytical mind and critical thinking ability that inspired confidence. For Tony, marketing has never just been about selling products. It has always been about understanding people, adding value, building trust, and maintaining relationships. These principles became the foundation of his career and guide his work today.
Retirement at 60 didn’t mean the end of his journey. Instead, it opened a new chapter. Drawing on years of experience, Tony reinvented himself as a respected marketing strategist and consultant. His advice is sought by organizations and business leaders in different sectors. His passion for marketing remains strong, showing that true professionals never really retire; they just find new ways to contribute.
One of his most visible contributions is the Nigeria Marketing Awards, an event that has become a highlight in the industry. Through this, Tony created a platform that celebrates excellence, innovation, and professionalism. The awards have sparked healthy competition, recognised outstanding achievements, and encouraged younger practitioners to aim higher.
Tony’s influence goes beyond the corporate world. As President of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN), he brought vision and leadership during two terms that lasted four years. At a crucial time for Nigeria’s marketing profession, he inspired members with new ideas, boosted the Institute’s profile, and supported initiatives that improved professionalism, ethics, and education.
Under his leadership, NIMN became more active and relevant to practitioners and stakeholders. His inclusive style and strategic thinking earned him admiration from colleagues across the country. His presidency is marked by distinguished service, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the Institute and inspire future marketing leaders.
By celebrating others, Tony has strengthened the profession he loves. He understands that industries grow when excellence is recognised and when great performance is worthy of emulation. His dedication to honouring excellence has enriched Nigeria’s marketing scene and significantly contributed to its growth.
But beyond his impressive credentials lies the man many know personally, a reliable friend, loving husband, caring father, trusted adviser, compassionate mentor, and true gentleman.
For me, Tony is more than an accomplished marketing professional. He is a close friend and has always felt like an older brother. Over the years, he has been one of my strongest supporters. His encouragement, wise counsel, and unwavering belief in me have helped me through various stages of my career.
We have worked on many projects, sharing ideas and challenging each other. Each experience has deepened my respect for his professionalism, discipline, work ethic, and ability to see opportunities where others see problems. Working with Tony has always been enriching because he brings not just knowledge but also wisdom and patience.
Our friendship goes beyond work. We share a common background from Edo State. This bond is built on shared values, respect, and culture. Our friendship has lasted through the years and is now part of our family histories.
Our families are close. My wife has a warm relationship with Tony’s family, as does her connection with his younger brother, Julius. Their families have long-standing ties with ours. These connections show what Tony values, that real friendships should go beyond business and become lasting family bonds based on trust and loyalty.
One of Tony’s best qualities is his humility. Despite his achievements and respected position in Nigeria’s marketing space, he remains approachable. He treats everyone with respect, no matter their status. He generously shares his time and knowledge and always encourages younger professionals starting their careers.
His leadership is not loud or flashy. It is quiet, thoughtful, and effective. He leads by example, not just words. These qualities have earned him respect from many generations of marketing practitioners.
Integrity has also been key in Tony’s life. In both work and personal relationships, he shows honesty, fairness, and dependability. His reputation is built on more than just skills; it is about character. In a time when reputations can easily be damaged, Tony remains a shining example of professionalism based on strong values.
For younger professionals entering marketing today, his life offers valuable lessons. It shows that success comes from hard work and learning. Leadership needs humility and service. Relationships are key assets. True greatness is not just about personal success but also about positively impacting others.
As we celebrate Tony Agenmonmen’s 70th birthday on August 8, we recognise not just a great marketing strategist but also a wonderful person whose kindness has touched many lives.
On behalf of my family and everyone whose lives you have influenced, I send heartfelt congratulations on this significant milestone. Thank you for your friendship, mentorship, and support over the years. Thank you for believing in people and investing your time, wisdom, and energy to help others succeed.
Your legacy is strong, not just in the brands you helped build or the professionals you mentored, but in the friendships you nurtured and the values you uphold.
May the coming years bring you good health, blessings, peace, and joy. May you continue to enjoy your family’s love, your friends’ admiration, and your professional colleagues’ respect. May your experience keep inspiring future marketers and leaders across Nigeria and beyond.
Happy 70th birthday, dear Oga Tony.
