Popular Nollywood actor Kunle Remi has caused a stir after saying the flooding in Lagos is due to what he calls the “dirtiness” of Nigerians.
In a video he shared on his Instagram story on Monday, the actor, known for his roles in many hit movies, expressed his anger over the recent heavy rains that have left many areas in Lagos State underwater.
“Let us call a spade a spade. We are a dirty people. Nigerians are dirty people and that’s why there is flood everywhere,” Remi said in the video.
He explained how the flooding has gotten worse, mentioning that it is no longer just the Island that is affected.
“I saw in the news Gbagada is flooded, even Ilupeju… My friend, I do not even know if he is eating well or if he is alive; he has been stuck in Agungi.”
Remi emphasized that Nigerians need to change how they throw away waste to avoid blocked drains and repeated flooding disasters.
The video spread quickly on social media, including X, and sparked mixed reactions. Many people agreed with his views, while others criticized him for oversimplifying a problem that includes poor infrastructure and governance.
In reaction to the video shared by the popular blog Instablog9ja, user #_Temmyyyyy commented, “This is so true, 80% of Lagos is so dirty and smelly, both the island and mainland whether it’s rainy or not. I don’t think it was as bad as this when Fasola was governor.”
Another user, #OluwatobiTofun1, said, “Kunle Remi’s comments have sparked debate, with many agreeing that careless waste disposal adds to blocked drainage systems and worsening floods. Others say that while public behavior is important, better city planning, proper drainage systems, and good waste management are also key to addressing flooding in Lagos.”
Not everyone agrees with this view. User #Son_Of_Grace12 replied, “So dirtiness makes everywhere dey flood? Be like this one no get sense. Is there any proper drainage system?”
Kunle Remi has used his social media to speak on social issues affecting Nigerians before. His latest comments come as reports show severe flooding in several Lagos communities after days of heavy rain, displacing people and causing major damage to property.
As responses keep coming in, many are urging the government to do more in clearing drainage systems and enforcing sanitation laws. Citizens are also reflecting on their habits that might make the flooding worse.
