Morocco has become the top-earning national team in Africa from the last two FIFA World Cups. They collected a total of $58 million in prize money from their impressive performances in 2022 and 2026, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The Atlas Lions made $31.5 million by reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This amount added to the $26.5 million they earned after finishing fourth in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
For the 2026 World Cup, Morocco's earnings included a $10 million base participation fee, a $2.5 million preparation grant, and $19 million in performance prize money for making it to the last eight.
This success shows Morocco's steady performance on the global stage. They became the first African and Arab nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022. They followed that up with another strong showing in 2026.
Morocco's journey this year ended with a 2-0 loss to France in the quarter-final on Thursday. Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele scored as France eliminated the Atlas Lions by the same scoreline that ended their run in the semi-final in Qatar four years ago.
France has now moved on to the semi-finals for the third World Cup in a row. They will face Spain in the next round.
Among other African teams in the 2026 tournament, Egypt came second in earnings. They collected $17.5 million after reaching the Round of 16. Senegal, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, South Africa, and Ghana each earned $13.5 million for their participation.
