New Take on Soyinka's Classic Play Wows Lagos Crowd

A fresh version of Professor Wole Soyinka’s classic play, ‘The Trials of Brother Jero’, impressed many in Lagos as ‘Return of Jero’ debuted at the J. Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History in Onikan.

The show took place on Saturday, July 25. It was part of events celebrating Soyinka’s 92nd birthday and the 40th anniversary of his Nobel Prize in Literature.

Babatunde Odubanwo produced the play. He reimagines Soyinka’s famous prophet in today’s Nigeria. The play looks at religion, politics, social media, business, and public morals.

While keeping the original work's humor and social commentary, the new version added modern characters, music, dance, and visuals. This was to attract a younger audience to theatre.

Many people attended the performance, including diplomats, theatre experts, academics, students, journalists, and culture lovers. They praised the mix of comedy and social critique in the production.

After the show, Odubanwo shared his thoughts. He called the play an artistic conversation between generations.

He explained that it was created not just as an adaptation but as a cultural link. This helps younger viewers connect with Soyinka’s literary impact while giving the older crowd a new view of a beloved classic.

He said, “We wanted audiences to recognize that the issues Soyinka examined decades ago have not disappeared. They have simply evolved. Theatre remains one of the most powerful mediums for provoking thought, preserving culture, and inspiring meaningful conversations.”

Odubanwo added that the play showed how relevant Soyinka’s work still is. It tackles leadership, faith, integrity, and societal values through a modern lens.

“Our goal was to reinterpret a literary classic in a way that resonates with today’s generation while preserving the brilliance of the original,” he said.

He also thanked Soyinka for giving his blessing for the adaptation. He recognized the hard work of the cast, crew, production team, sponsors, technical partners, and media outlets.

The play included impressive stage effects, live music, dance, and detailed costumes. The audience reacted positively to the performances and storytelling.

The producers mentioned that the successful opening has sparked talks about more shows, partnerships, and festival participation. They want to reach more audiences in Nigeria and beyond.

According to the producers, this adaptation shows the growing strength of Nigeria’s theatre scene. It proves that classic African literature can be reimagined while keeping its deep meaning and cultural importance.
