Nigeria and Ghana will face each other in the first match of the new Nigeria Cricket Federation’s Quadrangular T20 tournament today at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The Nigeria Cricket Federation announced the tournament last Saturday. This event is part of efforts to improve the country's cricket calendar. The first edition will have three countries and four teams, with Nigeria entering two teams.
The match between Nigeria and Ghana will kick off at 10 am. Later in the day, Nigeria A will play against Sierra Leone.
Statistics from ESPNcricinfo show that Nigeria has beaten Ghana in all five of their previous matches since 2019. Three of these games were held in Lagos, while the other two took place in Kampala and Rwanda.
The Yellow Greens plan to use this quadrangular series to prepare for future international events. This includes the 2028 T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional C Qualifier, which will happen in Abuja from October 18 to 25.
The Yellow Greens have been training under new manager Stephen Mangongo. He was introduced in May after signing a three-year contract with the Nigeria Cricket Federation.
Mangongo took over from Kenyan coach Steve Tikolo, who left earlier this year after more than three years in the role.
This series will be Mangongo’s second outing with Nigeria, following the Namibia Tri-Series in June.
In the quadrangular series, the four teams will play against each other twice in a round-robin format. The champion will be decided next Sunday.
