Team Nigeria made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday. They secured their first-ever win in 3×3 basketball by beating the Cayman Islands 21-17 in their Pool A opener.
PUNCH Sports Extra reports that Nigeria reached the winning score with one minute and 36 seconds left on the clock. They delivered a strong performance in this fast-paced game.
The Nigerian team mixed good shooting with solid defense to beat a tough Cayman Islands team. This win gives them a great start to their Commonwealth Games journey.
The Nigerian camp celebrated the victory. National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade joined players and officials after the final buzzer.
“This is the kind of start we were hoping for. Congratulations to the team for their fighting spirit and determination. Enjoy this victory, but stay focused because the journey has only just begun. Nigeria believes in you, and we are confident you can achieve even greater success at these Games,” Olopade said.
This win boosts Team Nigeria's campaign. They also have athletes competing in boxing and para powerlifting later on Friday.
Nigeria is fielding 74 athletes across 10 sports in Glasgow. The National Sports Commission aims for between 16 and 20 gold medals.
