Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is looking more and more likely to stay at Wrexham. This comes despite talks about his future with the club as the summer transfer window approaches, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

The 24-year-old's contract with Wrexham runs until the end of the 2026/27 season. But with no new agreement in place, there is a chance he might leave if talks do not move forward.

Okonkwo started his career at Arsenal but found it hard to get playing time because of tough competition. He joined Wrexham on loan during the 2023/24 season. The club, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, made his move permanent the next summer. He has since become one of the team's key players.

Leicester City, former Premier League champions, are said to be watching Okonkwo's situation closely. Still, Okonkwo says his main goal is to help Wrexham gain promotion to the Premier League. Last season, the club missed out on the playoffs by a narrow margin.

Wrexham has made impressive strides in recent years. They became the first club in English football history to achieve three straight promotions, moving from the National League to the Championship. However, they finished seventh last season, just two points shy of the playoffs.

“I don’t think it was a sad ending. I think, obviously, we were close. So, you know, it hurts a little, but we did really well this season. The next thing is to push for promotion next season. That’s been the idea since I’ve been there, so I don’t see any change for next season,” Okonkwo shared.

He also mentioned that he aims to keep his performances strong for both club and country. “Just to play as many games as possible and help whoever, Nigeria, Wrexham, or whoever I’m with, win as many games as possible,” he said.

Okonkwo’s success at Wrexham has brought him international attention after he switched from England to Nigeria. He made his Super Eagles debut in a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe at the Unity Cup. He also kept a clean sheet in the final, where Nigeria beat Jamaica 3-0 to win the trophy.

Even though there is no new deal yet, his recent comments show he is committed to Wrexham's goal of promotion. This is likely to be a setback for Leicester City's interest in the goalkeeper.
