Nigeria Premier Football League champions Rangers International have moved to the next stage of the CAF Champions League. They beat Benin Republic champions AS Sobemap 5-4 on penalties in Lomé, Togo, on Friday.
The Flying Antelopes had drawn 1-1 in Abeokuta last weekend. In Lomé, they again drew 1-1 after regular time. This meant they went straight to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
Rangers missed their first penalty kick but stayed calm. AS Sobemap missed two kicks, allowing Rangers to secure the win and advance.
Fidelis Ilechukwu’s team will now face either MC Alger from Algeria or ASN Nigelec from Niger Republic in the next round.
Rangers are back in Africa’s top club competition. They want to make an impact that reflects their history. The club's biggest success in Africa was winning the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977.
Last time they played in the preliminary round, they did not reach the group stage after winning the NPFL title in 2024.
Now, they hope to go further this time. They are eager to return to the elite level of African club football.
