Nigeria captain Sulaimon Runsewe says the Yellow Greens have a lot of work ahead after their tough time at the Namibia Tri-Series. He believes the experience will help the team as they continue to rebuild under new head coach Stephen Mangongo, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The Yellow Greens had a disappointing run in June, losing all four of their matches. They faced two defeats each against Namibia and Hong Kong.
Despite the poor results, Runsewe thinks the tour gave the team important lessons. The squad is still getting used to their new coach Mangongo, who started in May.
“It was great exposure for us. It didn’t go as we planned, but we take a lot of lessons from there,” Runsewe said.
“That was our first tour of the year, and it’s quite a new team. We are getting to know one another better on the pitch.
“Going forward, there is a lot of work to do. I think we fought really hard and it’s good to see the guys showing that kind of character.”
The Namibia tour was the Yellow Greens’ first task under Zimbabwean coach Mangongo as he began to reshape the national team.
Since returning from Namibia, the squad has gone back to training at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos. They are getting ready for their next international challenge.
Nigeria will host the ICC Africa Sub-Regional C Qualifier for the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in October. Gambia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Uganda, and Zambia will also join in the tournament.
The six teams will compete for the top two spots. The teams that succeed will move on to next year’s regional final in the quest for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
