The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season ended in a thrilling way. The races for the Golden Boot and Golden Glove awards went down to the final day. Fans celebrated titles, fought for continental spots, felt heartbreak, and watched teams battle relegation.
Almost every major outcome was unclear until the last moments of the season. The fight for the league’s top scorer award had a surprising twist that showed how intense and unpredictable the NPFL can be.
Rangers International striker Godwin Obaje started the final day as the top scorer with 14 goals. But he could not add to his tally despite many attempts. The pressure from his challengers was immense. They were eager to take the crown away from him.
That pressure changed the Golden Boot race completely. Remo Stars captain Victor Mbaoma scored on the final day, tying with Obaje on 14 goals. Wikki Tourists forward Jonathan Mairiga also reached 14 goals with a key strike.
All three players finished with 14 goals. But Mairiga topped the scoring chart because he scored all his goals from open play and did not have any penalties. Mbaoma came second, scoring one penalty and assisting twice. Obaje was third with one penalty goal and one assist.
It was sad that the two highest scorers ended their season with heartbreak. Mbaoma’s Remo Stars were relegated despite his hard work all season. Mairiga also faced disappointment as Wikki Tourists finished last in the NPFL table with only 40 points, leading to relegation to the Nigeria National League.
This outcome showed the harsh truth of the NPFL. Even great individual performances may not save struggling teams from falling apart. The key story was not just who finished first but the painful twist for two of the league’s best finishers.
Mbaoma’s goal on the final day did not help his team survive. His case was similar to Mairiga’s, whose goals could not stop Wikki Tourists from finishing at the bottom of the table. This situation made the 2025/26 Golden Boot race one of the most emotional and remarkable in recent NPFL history.
Behind the leading trio, Ikorodu City star Joseph Arumala finished fourth with 13 goals. His breakthrough season highlighted him as one of the league’s top attacking talents. Katsina United striker Uche Collins finished fifth with 12 goals.
Enyimba forward Chidera Michael and Abia Warriors striker Chukwuemeka Obioma both finished with 11 goals. A group of players also ended strongly with 10 goals, including Bendel Insurance attacker Alex Oweilfaleya, Shooting Stars forward Qamar Adegoke, and El Kanemi Warriors striker Daddy Abdulrahman Abdullahi.
The Golden Boot race was even more interesting because many top scorers played in matches that decided the title, continental spots, and relegation. Every goal had huge consequences.
While the goal race took center stage, the fight for the NPFL Golden Glove also had its own unforgettable moments. Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata won the 2025/26 Golden Glove award, finishing the season with 16 clean sheets in 32 matches.
But like the Golden Boot race, Atata’s victory came with mixed feelings. He had to watch his team lose 2, 1 to eventual champions Rangers International at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. This loss crushed Ikorodu City’s hopes of qualifying for continental football.
Atata missed this crucial match because he was with the Super Eagles camp in London for the Unity Cup tournament. Still, his clean-sheet record was enough to win the award in one of the closest goalkeeper battles the NPFL has seen in recent years.
Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh Abdullahi pushed for the award until the end. A clean sheet against Ikorodu City would have tied him with Atata on 16 shutouts, forcing the award to be shared. But those hopes faded when Musa Malik scored for Ikorodu City in the second half.
That goal kept Atata’s lead secure, even as Rangers captain Chidiebere Nwobodo led his team to a key 2, 1 victory that sealed the NPFL title in Lagos. The final whistle confirmed Rangers as champions and Atata as the best goalkeeper in the league.
Atata’s Golden Glove win capped an impressive season for one of the NPFL’s biggest surprises. He became one of the league’s most reliable players with a series of strong performances. His consistency and shot-stopping skills caught national attention.
These displays earned him a first call-up to the Super Eagles by head coach Éric Chelle for the Unity Cup in London. Atata played a big part in Ikorodu City’s great season, even though they narrowly missed out on continental qualification.
The 2025/26 NPFL season will be remembered as one of the most dramatic in Nigerian football history. For the first time in years, the title race, continental qualification, relegation battle, and individual awards were all still in question on the final day.
Rangers won the title under Fidelis Ilechukwu, but the season also showed a new generation of stars. From Mbaoma’s heartbreaking relegation to Atata’s rise to Super Eagles invitee, the season had stories that showed both the beauty and harshness of football.
In the end, the 2025/26 season proved again why the NPFL grows in excitement, unpredictability, and quality, with a finale that left fans all over the country breathless.
