The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season ended with a lot of excitement. The battles for the Golden Boot and Golden Glove awards came down to the last day. This was a day filled with title celebrations, fights for continental spots, heartbreaks, and a tough relegation battle.
In a season where almost everything was still up for grabs until the end, the competition for the league's top scorer brought a surprising turn that showed just how intense the NPFL can be.
Rangers International striker Godwin Obaje started the final day as the top scorer with 14 goals. However, he could not add to his goals, facing pressure from others eager to take the crown.
This pressure changed the Golden Boot race completely. Defending champions Remo Stars captain Victor Mbaoma scored on the final day to tie with Obaje at 14 goals. Wikki Tourists forward Jonathan Mairiga also hit the same mark with a crucial goal.
All three players ended the season with 14 goals. But Mairiga topped the scoring chart. He scored all his goals from open play, with no penalties. Mbaoma came second, with one penalty and two assists, while Obaje took third place with one penalty goal and one assist.
Interestingly, the two top scorers faced heartbreak at the end of the season. Mbaoma's Remo Stars got relegated, despite his great effort. Mairiga also felt disappointment, as Wikki Tourists finished last in the NPFL table with just 40 points, leading to their relegation to the Nigeria National League.
This outcome showed the tough reality of the NPFL. Even great individual performances might not save struggling teams from falling apart. The biggest story was not just who won, but the sad twist for two of the league's top finishers.
Mbaoma's goal on the last day did not help in the fight for survival. His team had a disappointing season that ended in relegation. Mairiga's goals also could not save Wikki Tourists, who finished at the bottom.
This unusual situation made the 2025/26 Golden Boot race one of the most emotional and memorable in NPFL history.
Behind the leading trio, Ikorodu City star Joseph Arumala finished fourth with 13 goals, marking a breakout season for him as one of the league’s top attacking talents.
Katsina United striker Uche Collins wrapped up the season in fifth place with 12 goals. Enyimba forward Chidera Michael and Abia Warriors striker Chukwuemeka Obioma both ended the campaign with 11 goals each.
Several players also finished strong with 10 goals, including Bendel Insurance attacker Alex Oweilfaleya, Shooting Stars forward Qamar Adegoke, and El Kanemi Warriors striker Daddy Abdulrahman Abdullahi.
The Golden Boot race was exciting. Many of the leading scorers played key roles in matches tied to the title race, continental qualification, and relegation fight. Every goal mattered.
While the goal race grabbed attention, the fight for the NPFL Golden Glove also brought unforgettable moments. Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata won the 2025/26 Golden Glove award. He ended the season with 16 clean sheets in 32 matches.
But like the Golden Boot race, Atata’s win came with mixed feelings. He watched from afar as his teammates lost 2, 1 at home to eventual champions Rangers International. This loss dashed Ikorodu City’s hopes of qualifying for continental football.
Atata missed that crucial match due to his involvement with the Super Eagles camp in London for the Unity Cup. Still, his clean-sheet record was enough to earn him the award in a fierce battle for goalkeepers this season.
Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh Abdullahi pushed the competition until the end. A clean sheet against Ikorodu City would have put him level with Atata at 16 shutouts. But those hopes faded when Musa Malik scored for Ikorodu City in the second half.
This goal secured Atata’s lead, even as Rangers captain Chidiebere Nwobodo led his team to a vital 2, 1 win, sealing the NPFL title in Lagos.
The final whistle confirmed Rangers as champions and Atata as the league’s best goalkeeper on paper. However, Ikorodu City’s dream of continental football ended sadly at home.
Atata’s Golden Glove win capped off a fantastic breakout season for one of NPFL’s biggest surprises. The young keeper became one of the league’s most reliable players with impressive performances.
His consistency and skill quickly got him national attention. This performance earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles squad by head coach Éric Chelle ahead of the Unity Cup in London. This confirmed his rise as an exciting young goalkeeper in Nigerian football.
Atata played a big part in Ikorodu City’s strong season, as they turned out to be one of the season’s surprises, even though they just missed out on continental qualification.
The 2025/26 NPFL season will go down as one of the most thrilling in modern Nigerian football history. For the first time in years, the title race, continental qualification, relegation battle, and individual awards stayed open until the last day.
Rangers emerged as champions under Fidelis Ilechukwu. But the season also highlighted a new generation of stars in the league. From Mbaoma’s heartbreak over relegation to Atata’s rise as a Super Eagles invitee, the season had stories that showed both the beauty and harshness of football.
In the end, the 2025/26 season again showed why the NPFL keeps growing in intensity, unpredictability, and quality, ending with a finale that left fans across the country breathless.
