Defending champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Rangers International, have acted fast to ensure stability for the upcoming season. They have announced a contract extension for their Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu, lasting until 2027.
The Enugu-based club shared the news on their official social media pages. This puts an end to the rumors surrounding the future of their title-winning coach.
"Building on what we’ve started.
“Our Technical Adviser has committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension ahead of the new season.
"New season. Same belief. Greater ambitions.
"Congratulations, Sabi. Good to have you on board as we continue the journey together.
"The journey continues," the club said.
This announcement comes just weeks after Ilechukwu led Rangers to their ninth NPFL title. They clinched the championship with a 2-1 win over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on the last day of the 2025/26 season.
This victory marked Rangers’ return to the top of Nigerian football and secured them a spot in next season’s CAF Champions League, alongside runners-up Rivers United.
The contract extension is seen as a way to provide stability as the Flying Antelopes get ready to defend their league title and compete internationally.
Speculation cleared
This news is a big change from what Ilechukwu said before Rangers won the title. In an earlier interview with PREMIUM TIMES, the coach expressed uncertainty about his future. He mentioned he would think about his next steps once his contract ended.
"It’s something we would sit and talk about.
"Seriously, I’m not saying that I’m going to stay. I’m not saying I’m not going to stay. But when you have Amobi Ezeaku, I think you have everything.
"But the truth is, I don’t want to work anywhere more than two years. What I’ve done at Rangers is because of Amobi Ezeaku. It might be goodbye. It might also not be goodbye.
"After coming back from London, I will sit down and think about myself, every situation, everything that is happening, things that I’m not okay with, things that I’m okay with.
"Maybe or maybe not. That is the truth."
His comments led to fears he might leave, especially since Ilechukwu has built a strong reputation as one of the best coaches in Nigeria.
But Rangers’ management managed to persuade him to stay and continue the project he started in Enugu.
Continuing the journey
Since he joined Rangers, Ilechukwu has transformed the team, bringing back one of Nigeria’s great clubs to the top.
He is known for his tactical skills and focus on details. He has built a team that is strong defensively while also being effective in attack throughout their title-winning season.
Rangers ended the season with the best defensive record in the league and were also among the highest-scoring teams.
This contract renewal shows the club’s desire to build on their success instead of starting over. Now, their focus shifts to the tough task of keeping the NPFL title and making a mark in the CAF Champions League.
