Nigeria may not be in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but football fans can still catch all the action. StarTimes Nigeria shared its coverage plans on Tuesday, ensuring that fans won't miss a single moment of the tournament.
At a media event in Lagos, the pay-TV company announced that it will air all 104 matches of the expanded World Cup. This tournament will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Nigeria did not qualify for the World Cup after a disappointing qualifying series. This continues the Super Eagles' absence from football's biggest event since they missed the 2022 edition in Qatar.
With no local team to support, fans are likely to focus on some of the world's top football players and famous teams during the month-long tournament.
StarTimes stated that it has set up special channels for the World Cup. They will provide live coverage of all matches, including pre-match analysis, halftime talks, and post-match reviews.
"We are one of the official broadcasters of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and all 104 matches will be live on StarTimes," said Oke Umurhohwo, the company's Marketing Director.
The broadcaster also announced a N50 million promotional package for subscribers. This includes a N10 million grand prize to be won through a live draw on the final day of the tournament.
According to Mr Umurhohwo, both new and existing subscribers can join the promotion. Winners will also receive solar home systems, TV sets, and other prizes.
StarTimes revealed that matches will be available on its satellite and terrestrial TV platforms, and through the StarTimes ON mobile app. This means subscribers can watch games on their mobile devices.
Additionally, StarTimes plans to hold viewing events in selected cities during the knockout rounds, semi-finals, and final to engage fans more during the tournament.
The company also announced price cuts on decoders and accessories ahead of the World Cup. They want to make it easier for fans to access the tournament coverage.
The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in FIFA history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across three host countries.
While Nigerians may watch the tournament from a distance again, interest in the event is expected to stay strong. This is due to the country’s deep love for football and the presence of several African teams in the competition.
