The World Health Organisation (WHO) has introduced a new plan with seven strategies to help governments and communities stop drowning. Drowning is one of the main causes of death among children around the world.

This plan, called PROTECT, was launched just before World Drowning Prevention Day, which is marked every year on July 25.

In a statement on Thursday, WHO said almost 300,000 people drown every year. This makes drowning one of the top ten causes of death for children aged five to 14 years globally.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus described every drowning as a tragedy that can be prevented. He urged governments to take practical actions based on evidence to save lives.

Mr Ghebreyesus said that preventing drowning needs teamwork from different sectors, not just one ministry.

“The seven measures are packaged under the acronym, PROTECT, translating the Global Strategy for Drowning Prevention into practical policy guidance for countries,” he said.

He explained that the plan focuses on safer places around water, better rescue and first aid services, safety for jobs related to water, and stronger safety rules for water transport.

The plan also encourages swimming and water safety education, better childcare systems, and readiness for floods and other emergencies.

Mr Ghebreyesus mentioned that WHO launched the PROTECT plan in Ghana to recognize the country's strong commitment to preventing drowning and improving water safety.

He stated that over 1,100 people die from drowning every year in Ghana, which is about three deaths daily.

Mr Ghebreyesus said children and young adults make up most of these deaths.

He praised Ghana’s leadership for showing how using evidence-based policies can lower drowning deaths and encouraged other countries to take similar steps.

Kelly Henning, who leads the public health program at Bloomberg Philanthropies, said the plan will save lives and boost global efforts to reduce drowning through proven methods.

Mr Henning stated that since 2014, Bloomberg Philanthropies has worked with WHO on drowning prevention.

The theme for World Drowning Prevention Day, “Unite to Turn the Tide,” calls for teamwork from governments, partners, and communities to prevent drowning and save lives.
