Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has shared that he is receiving treatment for cancer. He made this announcement on social media and asked for privacy for his family during this time.
The former striker for Liverpool and Celtic said he wanted to keep the diagnosis private. Unfortunately, the news went public due to a mistake on social media.
According to BBC Sport on Tuesday, Dalglish said, “I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.”
He mentioned that he did not plan to make this news public and felt sorry that it came out this way. “Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand,” he explained. “Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.”
Thanking Medical Staff
Dalglish also took the time to thank the medical staff who are taking care of him. He praised their hard work and respect for patient privacy.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves,” he said.
At 75 years old, Dalglish is seen as one of the best players in British football history. He scored 167 goals in 320 games for Celtic from 1969 to 1977. After that, he joined Liverpool, where he played 515 matches and became a club icon.
Dalglish also netted 30 goals in 102 matches for the Scotland national team.
After the announcement, Liverpool FC showed their support for their former player and manager.
“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club said. “The club would also like to respect his request for privacy moving forward.”
