Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has shared that he is getting treatment for cancer. He revealed this news through a social media post and asked for privacy for his family.
The former Liverpool and Celtic striker said he wanted to keep the diagnosis private. But it became public due to an accidental social media post.
As BBC Sport reported on Tuesday, Dalglish said, “I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.”
He explained that he did not plan to announce this news and felt bad that it was made public.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand,” he said. “Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.”
Dalglish also took the chance to thank the medical staff who are caring for him. He praised their professionalism and respect for his privacy.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves,” he said.
At 75 years old, Dalglish is seen as one of the greatest players in British football. He scored 167 goals in 320 games for Celtic from 1969 to 1977. Then he joined Liverpool, where he played 515 matches and became a club legend.
Dalglish also scored 30 goals in 102 games for the Scotland national team.
After the announcement, Liverpool released a statement to show their support for their former player and manager.
“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club said. “The club would also like to respect his request for privacy moving forward.”
