Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has shared that he is getting treatment for cancer. He made this known in a statement on social media and asked for privacy for his family.
The former striker for Liverpool and Celtic said he wanted to keep his diagnosis private. Unfortunately, it became public after an accidental post on social media.
As reported by BBC Sport on Tuesday, Dalglish said, “I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well,” he wrote.
He explained that he did not plan for this announcement. He feels sorry that the news got out.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand,” he said. “Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected.”
Dalglish also took the time to thank the medical staff who are helping him. He praised their professionalism and care.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves,” he said.
At 75 years old, Dalglish is seen as one of the greatest players in British football history. He scored 167 goals in 320 matches for Celtic from 1969 to 1977. After that, he joined Liverpool, where he played 515 games and became a club legend.
Dalglish also scored 30 goals in 102 games for the Scotland national team.
After he announced his diagnosis, Liverpool released a statement showing support for their former player and manager.
“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club said. “The club would also like to respect his request for privacy moving forward.”
