The peace deal between the US and Iran is now shaky as both nations exchange attacks. This is raising tension in the region.
On Wednesday morning, Iran fired missiles at a US base in Kuwait. The attack hit Kuwait’s airport. Sadly, one Indian national died and about 60 others were hurt.
Iran targeted Kuwait after a US missile strike hit an Iranian military control station on Qeshm Island, near the Strait of Hormuz.
The US also attacked a Botswana-flagged oil tanker that was heading to an Iranian port on Kharg Island. The Central Command said the ship did not follow the US blockade on Iranian ports.
In retaliation, Iran hit the Gulf states of Kuwait and Bahrain. Iranian officials claimed the attacks focused on American air and helicopter bases in the area, as well as the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard stated that the retaliatory strikes “should serve as a lesson” against unprovoked attacks on Iran’s facilities.
The US said all Iranian attacks on its forces failed. They claimed its missiles and drones were intercepted or missed their targets. But this goes against the Kuwait government’s report about the damage to its airport.
CENTCOM also mentioned they shot down three Iranian attack drones aimed “at civilian mariners that were rightfully transiting regional waters.”
This new round of conflict is happening three months after the first US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
Even though a ceasefire between the US and Iran has been in place since April 8, attempts to reach a lasting peace have not worked. Disagreements over Iran’s uranium enrichment and control of the Strait of Hormuz remain major sticking points.
Last week, Iran and the US announced a preliminary deal to stop the fighting. But neither side has officially approved or signed this agreement.
The latest strike also raises worries that Israel’s growing actions in Lebanon might impact the US-Iran ceasefire.
